Solo un uomo lento e muto
che tira l’erpice nel campo
con un ronzino che ciondola incerto
mentre incedono assonnati.

Solo fili di fumo senza fiamma
da mucchi di falsa gramigna,
che andranno avanti identici
ma le Dinastie svaniranno.

Una fanciulla e il suo uomo
avanzano confabulando:
prima che muoia la loro storia
nel buio gli annali di guerra svaporeranno.

10. Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) è stato sia un romanziere sia un poeta. Nato nel Dorsetshire – nel sud-ovest dell’Inghilterra – , studia prima architettura, quindi letteratura. Tra i venti e i trent’anni scrive numerosi versi, che però verranno pubblicati soltanto molti anni dopo (Wessex Poems, 1898). Diventa famoso soprattutto come intellettuale e romanziere, in particolare dopo l’uscita di Far from the Madding Crowd (1874). Ritorna a scrivere poesie nell’ultima parte della sua vita. Muore sul tavolo di lavoro nel 1928.
In Time of ‘Breaking of Nations’ è stata pubblicata nel bel mezzo della guerra, a gennaio del 1916, sulla «Saturday Review». Successivamente è stata inclusa nella raccolta Moments of Visions, uscita nel 1917, che comprende una sequenza di testi intitolata Poems of War and Patriotism. Il titolo di questa poesia, che è una delle poesie inglesi dedicate alla Grande Guerra più antologizzate in assoluto, è una citazione dall’Antico Testamento. In questi versi Hardy rappresenta tre scene rurali di vita quotidiana che procede indisturbata, nonostante il conflitto in corso: è una riflessione sulla memoria, e sulla guerra in quanto parte ineluttabile delle vicende umane
10. Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) was both a novelist and a poet. Born in Dorsetshire – in southwest England – he studied architecture first, then literature. Between the ages of twenty and thirty, he wrote numerous verses, which, however, were only published many years later (Wessex Poems, 1898). He became famous primarily as an intellectual and novelist, particularly after the publication of Far from the Madding Crowd (1874). He returned to writing poetry in the latter part of his life. He died at his writing desk in 1928.
In Time of ‘Breaking of Nations’ was published in the midst of the war, in January 1916, in the “Saturday Review.” Later, it was included in the collection Moments of Visions, released in 1917, which contains a sequence of texts titled Poems of War and Patriotism. The title of this poem, which is one of the most widely anthologized English poems dedicated to the Great War, is a quotation from the Old Testament. In these verses, Hardy depicts three rural scenes of daily life proceeding undisturbed despite the ongoing conflict: it is a reflection on memory and on war as an inescapable part of human affairs.
